KPP01 failed retake and color blindness/color weakness issues

Updated September 2026

FAQ

1.What happens if I fail the color blindness test?

If you fail the color blindness test, you will not be able to proceed with the driving license application process. It is recommended that you visit an eye clinic or hospital appointed by JPJ for a detailed examination and obtain a formal color vision diagnosis report. If color blindness is confirmed, JPJ will reject the issuance of the license, but you may try to apply for a special exemption (e.g., restricted to automatic transmission vehicles only), which requires submitting a doctor's certificate and approval from JPJ headquarters.

2.Can I pass with mild color vision deficiency?

Mild color vision deficiency (color weakness) can usually pass, but you must pass the JPJ color vision test. The test uses Ishihara color blindness plates; you only need to correctly identify key patterns to pass. If you fail, you can request a re-examination, where a JPJ doctor will assess the severity of your color weakness. Those with mild deficiency who can still distinguish traffic lights are generally allowed to obtain a driving license.

3.How long do I have to wait to retake the theory test after failing?

After failing the theory test (KPP01), you can apply to retake it on the same day or the next day, with no waiting period. However, you must reschedule the test time and pay the corresponding test fee. It is recommended to review the official JPJ question bank before retaking to improve your chances of passing. If you fail multiple times consecutively, the driving school may require you to attend additional training sessions.

4.Is there a fee for retaking the theory test?

Yes, there is a fee for retaking the theory test. According to JPJ regulations, each retake costs RM20 (for the computer-based theory test). This fee must be paid through the driving school or JPJ counter before the test. If you have purchased a test package, some driving schools may include one free retake, but from the second retake onward, you will typically need to pay the fee yourself.

5.How many times can I take the theory test?

There is no explicit limit on the number of attempts for the theory test; you can retake it unlimited times until you pass. However, each retake incurs a fee of RM20 and requires rescheduling. If you fail multiple times (e.g., more than 3 times), JPJ may require you to re-attend the KPP01 course (6 hours total) to ensure you have mastered basic traffic rules.

6.When was the color blindness test introduced?

The color blindness test has been a standard medical examination item in Malaysian driving license applications since the implementation of the Road Traffic Regulations in 1987. This test aims to ensure that drivers can clearly identify traffic signal colors to maintain road safety. The test is typically conducted during registration at a driving school, using Ishihara color blindness plates; those who fail cannot continue the license application process.
