Work Pass/E-Pass Holder Applying for a Malaysian Driving License
FAQ
1.Can I take the driving test with a work visa?
Yes. Foreigners holding a valid work visa (such as EP, S-PASS, E-PASS, etc.) can take the driving test in Malaysia, provided they meet the following conditions: aged 17 and above, holding a valid passport and work visa, and passing the JPJ-specified medical examination, theory test (KPP01), and practical test. Work visa holders have the same examination rights as Malaysian citizens, but the driving license validity is usually tied to the visa validity.
2.Is an employer confirmation letter required for work visa license conversion?
Yes. When converting to a Malaysian driving license, work visa holders must provide a confirmation letter issued by their employer, certifying that the applicant is employed and the work visa is valid. The letter must include the employer's company letterhead, applicant's name, passport number, position, and employment duration, and be stamped with the company seal. JPJ requires this letter to verify the applicant's legal work status, ensuring the license issuance aligns with the visa status.
3.Can S-PASS holders take the test?
Yes. S-PASS (Skilled Worker Permit) holders are eligible to take the driving test under Malaysian JPJ regulations. When applying, they must bring a valid S-PASS card, passport, employer confirmation letter, and the JPJ-specified medical report. S-PASS holders can apply for a motorcycle (B2) or car (D) license, with the same examination process as local citizens, but the license validity typically does not exceed the remaining validity of the S-PASS visa.
4.Can E-PASS holders take the test?
Yes. E-PASS (Professional Visit Pass) holders are allowed to take the driving test in Malaysia, provided the pass is valid and they are engaged in legitimate professional work. Applications must submit the E-PASS card, passport, employer letter, and medical certificate. JPJ imposes no additional restrictions on E-PASS holders, but it is advisable to confirm the remaining validity of the pass in advance, as the license issuance period generally aligns with the pass validity; if the pass is about to expire, it may affect the license approval.
