Other visas (Dependant/ RP-T/ renewal in progress) to take driving license

Updated September 2026

FAQ

1.Can I take the driving test with a marriage visa?

Yes. According to Malaysia's JPJ regulations, foreigners holding a valid Spouse Visa may apply for a driving license provided the visa validity is at least 6 months. You must bring your passport, visa, proof of residence, and a medical examination report.

2.Can I take the driving test with a dependant pass (study companion)?

Yes. Holders of a Dependant Pass may take the JPJ driving test if the visa validity is at least 6 months. You need to bring your passport, valid visa, school enrollment letter (if applicable), and a medical examination report.

3.Can I convert my license with an RP-T 10-year residence pass?

Yes. Holders of an RP-T (Residence Pass-Talent) 10-year residence visa, who already possess a valid driving license from their home country, may convert it to a Malaysian license without taking a test. Submit a certified translation of your license, passport, and original visa at the JPJ counter, and pay the conversion fee.

4.Can I take the test with a Dependant Pass?

Yes. Holders of a Dependant Pass may apply for a Malaysian driving license as long as the visa validity is at least 6 months. You must provide your passport, valid dependant pass, proof of spousal relationship, and a medical examination report.

5.Can I take the test with a short-term visa (1-3 months)?

No. JPJ regulations require that foreigners applying for the driving test have a visa validity of at least 6 months. Short-term visas (1-3 months) do not meet this requirement, so you cannot register for the test.

6.Can I still take the test if my visa is about to expire?

No. If your visa validity is less than 6 months, JPJ will reject your driving test application. It is recommended to renew or extend your visa first, ensuring it meets the validity requirement before registering.

7.Can I take the test while my visa renewal is in process?

No. During visa renewal, if the old visa has expired or has less than 6 months remaining validity, JPJ cannot process your test application. You must wait until the new visa is approved and meets the validity requirement before registering.

8.Can I take the test with a multiple-entry visa?

No. A Multiple Entry Visa typically allows only short stays and does not grant long-term residence status. JPJ does not recognize it as a valid qualification for taking the driving test. You need a long-term visa (such as work, marriage, or dependant pass) with at least 6 months validity.

9.Can temporary residents apply for a driving license?

Yes, but conditions apply. Temporary residents (e.g., holders of long-term social visit passes, work permits) may apply for a driving license if their visa is valid for at least 6 months. Holders of short-term tourist or business visas are not eligible.

10.When was RP-T introduced?

RP-T (Residence Pass-Talent) is a talent residence visa introduced by the Malaysian government in 2011 to attract highly skilled foreign talent. The pass is valid for 10 years and renewable, offering benefits such as multiple entries and exits and driving license conversion convenience.

11.When did dependent pass holders stop being able to convert their license?

JPJ Malaysia has not explicitly stated that dependent pass holders cannot convert their driving license. However, since 2023, some state JPJ offices have tightened scrutiny for family visa (including dependent pass) license conversions, requiring additional proof of residence or interviews. It is advisable to consult the local JPJ in advance to confirm the latest policy.
