Student Pass Holder Applying for a Malaysian Driving License
FAQ
1.Can Malaysian student visa holders get a driver's license?
Yes. Foreign students holding a valid student visa can obtain a driver's license in Malaysia, but they must be at least 16 years old (motorcycle) or 17 years old (car) and hold a valid student pass. They need to register at a driving school designated by JPJ and provide materials such as passport, student visa, and photos.
2.Must Malaysian student visa holders start from an L license to get a driver's license?
Yes. Student visa holders must start from an L license (Learner's Driving License), complete the theory course (KPP 01), computer theory test (KPP 02), driving training (KPP 03), and road test (KPP 04). After passing, they obtain a P license (Probationary License), and after a 2-year probation period, they can exchange it for a full license (CDL).
3.Under what circumstances can Malaysian student visa holders not exchange their driver's license?
Student visa holders can only apply for and exchange their driver's license during the validity period of their visa. Once the student visa expires, is canceled, or is converted to another non-student status (such as a work visa), they can no longer exchange it for a full license as a student. It is recommended to complete all tests and exchange procedures at least 1 month before the visa expires; otherwise, they will need to reapply or convert to another visa type.
